What to use for jail inmate search

The Federal Bureau of Prisons Inmate Locator covers federal inmates and does not represent state or local jail custody. USA.gov provides a directory to state departments of corrections for state prison and prisoner information.

Federal, state, and local custody systems are separate

Find the local custodian. Identify the local sheriff, jail, court, or police agency that owns the record. This avoids turning one county or city source into universal coverage.

For a recent local arrest, start with the county or city of booking. Find its official sheriff, jail or detention-department website, then its inmate roster, booking search or central-booking contact. Use the full name and variants, date of birth and booking number if known; compare the booking date and facility. A county booking number belongs to that local system.

Check whether the page covers current inmates, recent bookings or released people. A short booking log can omit someone still jailed. If there is no match, check spelling, date filters and the arrest location, then contact the jail’s official inmate-information or central-booking number with the identifiers. Ask which facility currently holds the person or which agency should confirm a transfer or release; do not treat one roster’s silence as proof of release.

Custody sources for jail inmate search

Need Official source What it can establish
Local jail custody. Booking county/city sheriff or jail. Use that jurisdiction’s roster or booking contact; confirm present status with the responsible facility.
State prison custody. State department of corrections. Use the state’s official locator or contact route; this is a separate system from a local jail roster.
Federal custody. Federal Bureau of Prisons - Inmate Locator. BOP covers federal inmates incarcerated from 1982 to the present. Released or Not in BOP Custody does not exclude custody elsewhere or supervision; release dates may lag sentence recalculation. For older federal records, follow the National Archives route.

Confirm the person before relying on a custody match

  • Verify the person. Resolve namesake risk with source-specific details: compare full-name variants, birth information, source jurisdiction, and record number and do not resolve conflicting details by name alone.
  • Choose the custody system. Choose the correctional level that owns the confinement record. This makes transfer, release, and current-facility questions easier to interpret.
  • Confirm the outcome. Check the official outcome when present status matters. Release, transfer, or later case activity can change what an older record means today.
